Anita Saarkessian

Anita Sarkeesian was born in Canada, but was raised in the United States. She has worked as media critic since. She was the creator of Feminist Frequency a website that provides commentary and videos on the representation of women in pop culture. Anita Sarkeesian is an award-winning Canadian-American feminist media critic as well as blogger. She is the creator and director-general of Feminist Frequency an educational not-for-profit website that explores representations of women in pop stories of culture. Destroying stereotypes about women are the main goals of her work. But, she also discusses issues of specifically targeted harassment online against women and other minorities who are excluded. A graduate in social and political thought from York University Sarkeesian is also well-known as a sought-after speaking engagement and has given speech at the TEDxWomen Festival as well as The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Feminist Frequency was created in 2009 by Sarkeesian, an undergraduate student at York University who had been fascinated by issues that concern gender and feminism for a lengthy period of. The ambitious lady planned to launch a web series that would examine the gender roles in video games and was the subject of an online harassment campaign. She was not deterred by the harassment, actually, it just reinforced her desire to become a media critic and feminist.
